Humidity control for health and wellbeing

August 8, 2022

What humidity is healthiest?

Different sources make different claims. The Sterling chart, drawn from a widely sourced and well-respected study into the effect of humidity in the home, suggests between 40-60% relative humidity in order to control against a wide range of possible health-affecting factors, such as mould and fungal growth, asthma, bacteria, viruses and mites.

If the solution is required to address a specific challenge, a finer range can be targeted. Further, depending on the space, this range may be reached through humidification or dehumidification. These considerations are especially important in hospitals, factories, commercial buildings and offices- areas where individuals are required to spend significant amounts of time.

What happens if relative humidity is too low?

A low relative humidity means air will begin to strip moisture from it’s surroundings. It some extended instances, low relative humidity can cause structural and surface damage to floors and surfaces as the air draws latent water from the materials used. In humans, a low relative humidity may present as;

  • Lowered cold and infection resistance
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Itchy eyes
  • Nosebleeds
  • Airway and throat irritation

What happens if relative humidity is too high?

A high relative humidity is not a good thing either. The excess water vapour in the air allows for the easy transfer of pathogens and mould growth. High relative humidity also affects hygroscopic materials and surfaces in the area, causing deterioration and condensation across cold surfaces. In humans, high humidity may present as;

  • Feeling stuffy/congested
  • Dehydration
  • Allergy and asthma flare ups
  • Muscle cramps
  • Migraines
  • Fatigue
  • Heat Exhaustion/heatstroke

Depending on respiratory difficulties, allergies, temperature regulation and even blood pressure, high and low humidity can affect different individuals at different rates and severities.

How do I correct the humidity?

Humidity challenges are often addressed through the use of a humidifier or dehumidifier, depending on whether the humidity needs to be raised or lowered. At Humidity Solutions, we supply a range of humidity control units for commercial and industrial needs.
